Graduate programme

Please note that the 2010 Graduate Programme has now closed for applications.

International Power offers a variety of different programmes which operate over a two-year period. Training is conducted through a variety of formats including formal classroom instruction, on-the-job coaching, shadowing, seminars, site visits and e-learning. We recognise that everyone has different learning styles and wherever possible we structure your learning to suit your style.

You will be appointed a mentor for the full two-year programme and you will enjoy the benefit of a corporate sponsor. Each graduate is also provided with a buddy to support integration within each team. You will have the opportunity to receive feedback and to provide feedback on your own development.

An example of the streams of graduate programme on offer are:

  • Corporate Finance
Our Corporate Finance Graduate Programme provides the opportunity to train and develop in a team whose primary responsibility is identifying and obtaining funding for International Power’s various activities. The tailored programme equips graduates to develop the skills, knowledge and abilities required to become a Financial Analyst and play a key role in supporting the Company’s financial decisions and the tools/analysis used to make these.
  • Commercial
Our Commercial Graduate Programme is a rotational programme involving six month placements in four key areas of our commercial stream of business. The structured, rotational approach provides an opportunity to work in UK power and gas trading, risk identification and management, valuation and analysis and our new retail business.
  • Operations and Engineering
From inception to de-commissioning the Operations and Engineering Team’s activity covers all aspects of procuring, owning and operating power plants. They are responsible for engineering, operations and maintenance globally and support new projects, acquisitions and mergers. We have a number of graduate opportunities for those with a background in engineering and an interest in power generation technology.

Our expectations

We expect to attract graduates who aim to achieve and contribute towards our growing business and who demonstrate a natural intellectual curiosity and a willingness to engage in the International Power experience. If you are willing to bring your energy and enthusiasm to work with you, you will benefit. We expect you to honour the programme and learn as much as you can. Evidence of your growth and contribution is expected.

What you can expect

International Power respects the graduate process and recognises the unique skills and attributes of each and every individual. You will be known to all your colleagues and you can expect to be included as a key member of the team in which you are working. Responsibility and opportunity to participate in projects are provided to graduates where possible.

Although professional development and training are the cornerstones of employee development, employees are also encouraged to add to their learning in a non-working environment.

As such, graduates are encouraged to make use of a learning voucher scheme in order to access non-occupational learning. This can be used for any learning or development you choose, however frivolous or eccentric.

On successfully completing the graduate programme, our graduates are offered the opportunity to take up a permanent position within International Power. Our graduate programme sets you up for success and our continuous learning environment ensures that you continue to build your knowledge and skills.
